[China Travelogue] Harbin Reawakens Its Century-Old “Yellow Houses”
: :

After more than 100 days of careful restoration, Harbin’s Huayuan Street historical and cultural district has reopened, turning a cluster of century-old “yellow houses” into a fresh cultural hotspot.

The row of yellow walls, red roofs and green shutters keeps its old European charm while new touches — playful strawberry-bear installations and a storybook garden — add a contemporary, photogenic twist. Together they make the street a lively place where history and modern leisure meet.

Built in the early 1900s as brick-and-timber houses, the “yellow houses” retain original details: thick two-and-a-half-brick walls and double-pitched roofs that once helped keep interiors warm in winter and cool in summer. Preserved and reimagined, the district now invites visitors to stroll, snap and soak up Harbin’s layered past — with plenty of picture opportunities along the way.
