Taiwan Strait Winds Energise Fuzhou’s Now and Future
: :

Flowing down the Min River to where it greets the sea, we arrive at Fuzhou—the historic heart of Fujian Province, a place where river currents and ocean tides converge.

Now, let’s discover how Fuzhou is tapping into one of nature’s most powerful forces: the relentless winds off its shores.

Wang Jinshu / Manager, Operations Management Department, Fujian Three Gorges Offshore Wind Power Industry Park Operation Co., Ltd.

Fujian’s natural edge lies in its wind. Thanks to monsoons and the Taiwan Strait’s funneling effect, our average wind speeds hit 8 to 9 meters per second—making this some of the strongest, most consistent wind resources not just in China, but across the entire Asia-Pacific.

Here’s how it works: when wind funnels from open waters into mountain valleys, it compresses—speeding up dramatically. Scientists call it “valley wind.” In cities, you might know it as the “canyon effect.”

The data speaks for itself. Fujian’s wind map lights up with intense velocities along its coastline—nature’s perfect power source.

And in 2023, Fujian made history by deploying the world’s largest direct-drive offshore wind turbine, with a rotor diameter so vast it dwarfs a 53-story skyscraper.

Wang Jinshu:

A single rotation of this 18 MW turbine generates 40 kWh of clean energy—enough to power a home for days. Annually, it produces 72 million kWh, sustainably meeting the electricity demands of 39,000 households.

As China’s first carbon-neutral industrial park, we knew 90% of our emissions came from electricity. So from day one, we built an intelligent microgrid—combining wind and solar to generate 55 million kWh yearly, while sharing surplus clean power with nearby communities.

Iris Wong:

Forests capture carbon; winds harvest energy. Fujian has cracked the code for green growth—transforming its lush mountains and boundless winds into lasting prosperity.
