Archaeologists have unearthed over 1,000 cultural relics at the Luojiahe site in Chunhua County, Xianyang City, northwest China’s Shaanxi Province. Excavations by the Xianyang Cultural Heritage Institute, carried out from March 2022 to September 2025, revealed pottery, stone tools, jade artefacts, and roof tiles dating back over 4,200 years.

“The craftmanship was very meticulous. There are some traces of pattern on the surface,” said Xie Gaowen, a research fellow at the institute. Handmade tiles and polished pottery reflect the advanced skills of Longshan Period artisans. Some jars, featuring three holes to release smoke, allowed users to feed the fire below while cooking food above, efficiently concentrating heat.

Spanning 50,000 square metres, with 14,200 square metres excavated in the central zone, the site offers valuable insight into ancient daily life and craftsmanship in the region.
