Foshan, one of the birthplaces and major centres of Lingnan Cantonese culture, boasts a profound cultural heritage. During the National Day holiday, the Ancestral Temple Museum in downtown Foshan hosted the immersive garden event - Wonderful Tour of Twenty-Seven Shops. Locals and visitors explored an ancient-style bazaar, watched intangible cultural heritage performances, engaged with live characters and experienced authentic Lingnan culture.
Modelled on Foshan’s historic bustling commercial quarter of Twenty-Seven Shops, the event recreates the prosperous market scene of a Qing Dynasty town. The nightly opening ceremony commences at 7 p.m., featuring gong ringing, lantern unveiling, shopkeeper addresses and auspicious beasts display to launch the bazaar.
Ms. Zhang / Visitor:
"This is my first time visiting the Ancestral Temple at night. The venue is vibrant, brimming with prosperity, serenity and joy amid countless lights."
Visitors may choose one of three designated roles to collect stamps along exclusive routes. Vintage quest scrolls act as guides, directing guests to featured stalls for check-ins and photos with live characters. Participants can also play games to obtain ancient banknote-style tokens, which can be redeemed for limited souvenirs.
Ms. Peng / Local Resident:
"The banknote tokens and character interactions appeal to me most. The performers are welcoming, and the event is highly engaging."
Luminous lion dances, traditional Cantonese wedding host performances and Foshan Southern-style martial arts take the stage in succession, drawing warm applause and elevating the event to its climax.
Ms. Li / Visitor:
"Excellent performances stem from long-term dedication. The show is spectacular, making this visit rewarding."
