[Cultural China] A Cultural Guardian in Xiangzhigou: Breathing New Life Into Ancient Paper
: :

With skilled hands and visionary creativity, 57-year-old Hu Zongliang is ensuring China's 1,000-year-old papermaking tradition not only survives but thrives. As a nationally recognized guardian of this intangible cultural heritage, he works in the bamboo-clad valleys of Xiangzhigou, where he's become a bridge between ancient craftsmanship and modern innovation.

Trained by his father in Cai Lun’s legendary 72-step craft, Hu perfects paper so exquisitely thin yet durable that collectors treasure it. But his real genius lies in reimagining tradition: Floral-infused sheets where petals bloom in the fibers, Bamboo-hemp hybrid paper with sculptural texture, Elegant functional art—lanterns, fans, and lamps that bridge past and present.

Now, his workshop draws waves of visitors, transforming Xiangzhigou into a living museum. For Hu, every sheet tells a story—and his next chapter is about passing the torch. "This craft survived dynasties," he says. "With young hands to carry it, it will shine for a thousand more."
