Ocean Park Hong Kong unveiled the names of its adorable giant panda twins on May 27—big sister "Jia Jia" and little brother "De De."
The names carry heartfelt blessings:
Jia Jia (家/佳) echoes "home" and "auspicious" in Chinese, symbolizing support and good fortune
De De (得/德) means "success" and "virtue," reflecting hopes for Hong Kong’s thriving future
Born last August to Ying Ying and Le Le (gifts from China’s central government), the cubs continue Ocean Park’s 25-year panda legacy. The park’s first pandas, An An and Jia Jia (1999), set longevity records—An An passed at 35 (oldest male captive panda) and Jia Jia at 38 (oldest panda ever).
Today, the park cares for six pandas, including newcomers An An II and Ke Ke, also gifted last September. Each bear carries a story of conservation and cross-border friendship.
