China has put the world's first 16-megawatt tension-leg platform (TLP) floating wind power platform into operation, marking a significant milestone for deep-sea renewable energy development. The "Haiyou Anlan" has been connected to the Lufeng offshore oilfield in the South China Sea, supplying green electricity directly to offshore oil production facilities.
Located about 200 kilometres southeast of Shenzhen, the platform operates in waters 136 metres deep and 136 kilometres from shore, setting global records for the deepest water application, the farthest offshore deployment and the largest single-unit capacity for a TLP-supported floating wind platform.
Standing as tall as a 110-storey building, the typhoon-resistant platform is designed to withstand level-17 super typhoons with wind speeds of up to 220 km/h. It is expected to generate around 54 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about 35,000 tonnes while saving approximately 15,000 cubic metres of fuel oil each year.
