[China Travelogue] Step Back in Time in Jiangmen’s Ancient Towns
: :

In recent years, Jiangmen has made great strides in tourism, emerging as a top short-haul getaway for residents of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

The arcade buildings of Chikan Ancient Town and the nearby watchtowers are iconic symbols of overseas Chinese culture—and a must-see for any visitor. Stretching three kilometers along the river, more than 600 arcade buildings form the largest and best-preserved arcade complex in China. During festivals, the area comes alive with decorations and cultural performances. About five kilometers away, 1,833 watchtowers dot the countryside, inviting visitors to step inside these historic structures, where Chinese and Western designs meet, and experience the cultural fusion of a century ago.

Tangkou Old Market, meanwhile, exudes creativity and a quiet artistic charm. A bookstore converted from old grain silos retains its unique cylindrical structure and industrial character. Browsing books on local figures and customs here offers a deeper sense of the place. Strolling through the restored old town, as trams glide slowly by, feels like a journey back in time, revealing Jiangmen at its vibrant peak in the last century.
