An Oriental Darter has been observed at Huizhou West Lake in south China’s Guangdong Province, marking the first recorded sighting of the species in the region and highlighting continued improvements in the local ecological environment.

Also known as Anhinga melanogaster, the Oriental Darter is a rare waterbird native mainly to Southeast Asia, with a relatively small global population. The species is known for its strict habitat requirements, typically inhabiting freshwater lakes and rivers with clear water and plentiful fish resources.

Its unexpected appearance at Huizhou West Lake is being seen as a positive sign of improving biodiversity and water quality in Guangdong. The sighting has also attracted attention from birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts, further underscoring the growing ecological value of the area.
