In Guiyang’s Ali Village, rolling hills are dotted with ruby-red waxberries, their sweet-tart scent filling the summer air. A traditional waxberry festival turned this harvest into a full-blown celebration of rural life, blending local customs, booming agriculture, and vibrant tourism into one unforgettable event.
The festival kicked off with a showcase of Ali’s cultural riches: folk dances, traditional music performances, and interactive segments that had both villagers and visitors tapping to the rhythms. As twilight fell, a crackling bonfire illuminated the night, drawing everyone into circle dances and songs beneath the starlit sky.
The village’s unique setting—at 1,000 meters on the transition from the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau to the Hunan-Guangxi hills—offers cool nights and ample rain, perfect for growing sugar-rich waxberries. With an average annual temperature of 14.6°C and over 1,000 mm of rainfall, this year’s crop is expected to top 11 million kg of succulent fruit.
Dedicated to its “Fruit Village” brand, Ali Village has made waxberries a pillar of the local economy. Festival highlights include hands-on picking across three prized varieties and a marketplace where fresh berries and related products invite tasting and discovery—proof that when agriculture, culture, and tourism join forces, the sweetness of success follows.
