Beijing has been named the UNESCO-UIA World Capital of Architecture 2029, earning global recognition for its blend of historic heritage and forward-looking urban development.

The designation, announced by UNESCO following a recommendation from the Joint Committee for the World Capital of Architecture, recognises the Chinese capital's success in preserving its rich architectural legacy while promoting sustainable, liveable city planning.

Jointly established by UNESCO and the International Union of Architects (UIA), the programme highlights the role of architecture, urban planning, culture and heritage in advancing sustainable urban development. Every three years, the host city of the UIA World Congress is awarded the title.

Under the theme "Back to Balance", Beijing will host the 2029 UIA World Congress of Architects alongside exhibitions, conferences, educational forums and public events exploring architecture's role in cultural preservation, harmony between people and nature, and sustainable urban development.
