[Green Highlights] Buying Air: Guangzhou's Mangroves Generate Tradable Carbon Credits
: :

Guangzhou has completed its first blue carbon credit transaction, marking a major milestone in the city's carbon trading efforts. In an innovative ecological compensation case, a liable party paid RMB 105,000 to purchase carbon credits generated by restored mangroves in Nansha—effectively offsetting its environmental impact through blue carbon.

Guangzhou has restored more than 43 hectares of mangroves at Nansha Wetland in recent years. The site recently completed its first carbon accounting, registering 1,251 tons of carbon emission reductions. Following the assessment, the Guangzhou Carbon Emissions Trading Center facilitated a settlement requiring the responsible party to purchase 554 tons of mangrove afforestation carbon credits as ecological compensation.

Mr. Li, Deputy GM, Guangzhou Carbon Emissions Trading Center:

"The RMB 105,000 proceeds will be reinvested directly into mangrove restoration, routine monitoring, native germplasm conservation, and ecosystem enhancement."

Guangzhou has established a full-cycle mechanism that links marine restoration, blue carbon development, ecological value conversion, and reinvestment in conservation. Moving forward, the city aims to expand its blue carbon initiatives, broaden its portfolio of carbon sink projects, and explore more diverse pathways for realizing ecological value.
