I'm in Tonga to issue a global SOS - save our seas on rising sea levels.

For our oceans, a 1-2°C temperature rise is like a dangerous human fever - potentially deadly for marine life.
Beneath the waves, coral reefs are already feeling climate change's devastating impact.
Dr. Chui Pui Yi Apple / Research Assistant Professor, CUHK
Just a 1-2°C summer sea temperature increase triggers mass coral bleaching. The corals lose their food source and weaken. Prolonged bleaching means certain death.
My most shocking dive was during 2024's mass bleaching event. Seeing vibrant corals turn ghostly white...that moment hardened my resolve to act.
Affectionately called "Coral Mom," Dr. Chui leads groundbreaking work cultivating thousands of coral juveniles.
Dr. Chui Pui Yi Apple:
Our first method is asexual propagation - like plant grafting. We nurse broken coral fragments for months until healthy, then return them to the ocean.
The second approach uses sexual reproduction. We collect coral sperm and eggs annually. The 1mm larvae need two years of careful rearing until they reach 2-3cm - giving them a fighting chance when transplanted.
Healthy reefs are underwater cities - providing food, shelter and breeding grounds for marine life while protecting coasts from destructive waves.
But we must address the root cause. Only through low-carbon living can we truly reduce pressure on these fragile ecosystems.
