A record-breaking car carrier has been delivered in Guangzhou’s Nansha district, underscoring the Greater Bay Area’s growing strength in advanced shipbuilding. Named ‘Glovis Leader’, the vessel is the largest of its kind globally, measuring 230 metres in length and 40 metres in width, with capacity to transport up to 10,800 vehicles. Built by Guangzhou Shipyard International under China State Shipbuilding Corporation alongside China Shipbuilding Trading, it has been handed over to South Korea’s HMM and will be operated by Hyundai Glovis. Designed for versatility, the ship features 14 decks capable of carrying electric and hydrogen vehicles as well as heavy trucks. It cruises at 19 knots and incorporates a dual-fuel system using liquefied natural gas to meet stringent international emissions standards. The delivery highlights Guangzhou’s role as a key shipbuilding hub, with strong order demand and steady output reinforcing its industrial momentum.
