Harvey Lee: This is my second time in Vanuatu.   I truly believe in this saying: “To serve, not to be served.”   Narrator: Last year in December, a 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck Vanuatu. Between April and July this year, the GX Foundation distributed over 4,500 disaster relief supply kits across Vanuatu.   Harvey, an intern with the Foundation, returned to the South Pacific Island nation to celebrate the success of the project with the local villagers.   Harvey: It was only after I arrived that I realised there aren’t many Hongkongers here. But even if they don’t know who are you on the bus, when they realise you’re part of a volunteer group from Hong Kong, they warmly greet you.   Narrator: The entire project was built on a foundation of local collaboration.   Narrator: Vanuatu is the 8th country where the GX Foundation has implemented a project. This time, 18 secondary and university student volunteers from Hong Kong and Mainland China took part— Teaching locals post-disaster skills, dengue fever prevention and promoting healthy diets.   Harvey: I’ve been very fortunate – to have a good education and family.   Coming to Vanuatu, I’ve seen that some locals may have chronic illnesses but are unable to see a doctor, or don’t have access to better education and healthcare for various reasons.   This has changed how I view the world and society.     Narrator: From knowledge-sharing to community empowerment, these efforts have left a lasting impact, helping the islanders feel safer, more resilient, and better prepared for the future. For the volunteers, this journey has been equally transformative, reminding them of the true meaning of service, and how small acts of care can ripple across oceans. Together, they celebrate not just the success of a project, but the beginning of deeper connections built on trust, compassion, and hope.
