[We Care] Lifelines Delivered: Relief Kits Reach Vanuatu's Earthquake Victims
: :

Kalpeau Vatoko:
We have received a lot of kits, and they are very, very useful to my community now.

The radio is very useful to me now. I listen to radio nearly every day.

Because it gives me the news. And also if there is an earthquake anywhere around the world or here, we have advanced notice.

Narrator:

Last year in December, a 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck Vanuatu. On these islands, resilience is a part of everyday life. When natural disasters strike, communities come together, but the challenges are immense.

To help meet these urgent needs, the Hong Kong-based international medical humanitarian organisation - GX Foundation - has delivered thousands of disaster relief supply kits – each designed to provide safety, health and communication in times of crisis.

For communities across Vanuatu, simple tools like the radio can be lifesaving.

Prof. Chan:
Very often, especially the first few days after a disaster, government aid or NGO’s are not immediately able to reach communities. Roads are blocked and it’s difficult to get around.

So our emergency kits are mainly meant to be used for the first 3 days, with use up to a week, at least giving the disaster victims a chance to take care of themselves, reducing their risk to illness or injury.

The entire development process of this relief kit was done in collaboration with the locals. We have the technological capabilities, but to properly utilise it? That depended on the local women’s groups, residents and even churches.

Serah Garae:
The radio is the most useful.

Because most of us live outside in the, outside the areas

And where they cannot have the networks or the reception from the phones

And the radio is useful

Which is connect to here we could hear about all the emergencies or yeah, whatever, the warnings that the media can give to people to go onto their remote areas or safe areas to be safe.

Narrator:

Each kit contains 20 essential items, including gloves, masks, whistles, basic first aid supplies and a hand-crank emergency radio, among other things.

By providing these essentials, the GX Foundation ensures that even in the most remote places, people stay connected, informed, and prepared.
