Professor Chan of the Faculty of Medicine at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), and Chief Executive Officer of GX Foundation, has been awarded the Kwok Group Professorship in Global Public Health and Humanitarian Medicine.  

Professor Chan also delivered her inaugural lecture sharing her frontline humanitarian medical relief experiences in the digital age.

"In humanitarian relief work, whether or not a patient can be saved, everyone deserves to be treated with dignity. In today's digital age, frontline healthcare workers need to spend more time in fields to understand the risks people face. As populations age and living conditions change, communities face different challenges than they did before. If we want policies and healthcare programmes that genuinely help people, they must be based on a better understanding of the challenges communities face today."

GX Foundation's work on controlling vector-borne diseases through physical intervention measures has twice been published in the internationally renowned medical journal The Lancet. Professor Chan recently led a team to provide assistance in Tonga and Fiji with application of these well recognised measures.

"Asia has long been one of the regions most vulnerable to climate change, earthquakes, floods and other natural disasters. GX Foundation's work never stops. We currently operate in 13 countries, and this year I still have 10 countries to visit for project assessments and follow-up.

The establishment of this Chair Professorship at CUHK is a tremendous boost to the field. With the University's support and GX Foundation's platform, I hope we can carry out more research to help shape public health policy, contribute to people-to-people connectivity, and inspire more young people and volunteers to join humanitarian work."
