The Han people are the largest ethnic group in China, accounting for more than 90 percent of the country's population. They are also the world’s largest ethnic group and form a significant population in countries such as Singapore.   The origins of the Han can be traced to early agricultural communities that developed along the Yellow River basin thousands of years ago. Ancient cultures such as Yangshao and Longshan laid the foundations for some of China’s earliest civilisations, while later dynasties helped shape the political and cultural traditions that continue to influence Chinese society today.   These early societies developed in fertile river valleys, particularly along the Yellow River, Yangtze River and Pearl River basins. Over time, these regions supported growing populations, expanding settlements and complex social structures, helping establish the foundations of Chinese civilisation.   Today, the Han people are found throughout China and beyond. Mandarin, the country’s official language, is rooted in Han linguistic traditions, while many customs, festivals and cultural practices associated with the Han continue to play an important role in shaping modern Chinese society.
