Young skiers in northeast China are blending winter sports with cultural flair, turning ski slopes in Jilin City, Jilin Province, into unlikely stages for traditional Chinese aesthetics.
Skiing in traditional costumes has become a popular and playful trend among young enthusiasts, with some donning elaborate Peking Opera outfits as they glide down the slopes. Short videos of these performances have quickly gone viral, drawing widespread online attention and sparking interest from local businesses.
Ding Ning, manager of Manwei Ski Club, said his team enjoys improvisation and “prefer not to stick to the script”. Their Chinese-style ski videos have helped the club amass more than 300,000 followers on social media, translating popularity into new opportunities such as ski lessons and equipment rentals.
“It’s mostly kids who are trying out skiing,” Ding noted. With more than a million visits each year, the slopes represent a sizeable market, and some performers earn over 100,000 yuan in a single season.
The trend highlights youthful creativity while boosting local businesses and offering a fresh way to celebrate tradition on snow.
