[China Travelogue] Ancient Chinese Irrigation Projects Earn Global Heritage Status

China’s ancient ingenuity shines brighter than ever, as four historic irrigation systems just earned World Heritage Irrigation Structures status this September.

Leading the list is the breathtaking Yuanyang Hani Rice Terraces in Yunnan—a living landscape masterfully carved into the Ailao Mountains since the Tang Dynasty. Covering 3,740 hectares, these terraces create a stunning ecosystem of forests, villages, and flowing water.

In Jiangsu, the Chishan Lake Project, first built in 239 AD, still actively protects farmlands with its dual role in irrigation and flood control. Sichuan’s Jianjiang Weir, dating to the Western Han Dynasty, continues to nourish over 10,000 hectares today. Meanwhile, Beijing’s Yongding River Ancient Canal System, originating in the Liao Dynasty, showcases brilliant engineering that harnesses river bends to manage water, silt, and floods.

Together, these sites honor timeless wisdom that has shaped the land and sustained life for generations.
