[China Travelogue] Living Lotus Canvas: Classical Charm Meets Impressionist Splendor

At Hangzhou's historic Qianwang Temple, a lotus exhibition is now in full bloom. The ancient Wuyue shrine is awash in Monet-like colors, transforming every corner into a living painting.

Stepping into Qianwang Temple, visitors are greeted by the fragrance of lotus blossoms carried on the breeze and the lush greenery of the temple grounds. White walls, dark-tiled roofs, pavilions, and waterside gazebos—hallmarks of traditional Jiangnan architecture—blend beautifully with impressionist-inspired floral displays and picturesque bridges, creating a harmonious fusion of Eastern and Western aesthetics. The exhibition features more than 50 varieties of lotus, over 60 varieties of water lilies, rare ancient lotus plants, and more than 5,000 potted flowers and aquatic plants. Indoor ecological terrariums recreate the landscapes of West Lake, allowing visitors to experience the charm of its wetlands up close.

Visitors say the rainy season lends the exhibition a unique enchantment, with lotus blossoms emerging through the mist and raindrops cascading like curtains of pearls, creating the feeling of stepping into a fairyland. Organizers say the exhibition will run through the end of August, with fresh lotus blooms regularly added to ensure each visit offers a different experience.
