A rainbow arched over the Hukou Waterfall on the Yellow River in Shanxi Province on Sunday (October 26), creating a striking natural display. The waterfall is the largest on China’s second-longest river and a popular destination for visitors.
In autumn, the Hukou maintains a steady and bountiful flow, with more than 1,000 cubic metres of water plunging over 30-metre-high cliffs every second. The turbulent currents produce a thick mist, which, on sunny days, refracts sunlight to form a vivid rainbow stretching across the cascade.
The waterfall sits where the Yellow River narrowly sharpens from over 300 metres to just 50 metres wide before plunging into a deep riverbed. Named “Hukou”, or “kettle mouth”, for its distinctive shape, it continues to captivate visitors with its raw power and striking natural beauty.
