[China Travelogue] Yellow River Wetlands Welcome Returning Swans

As temperatures fall, graceful flocks of swans have arrived from Mongolia and Siberia to the Yellow River Wetland in Sanmenxia, central China, marking the start of their winter stay. Their return has transformed the wetland into a haven for birdwatchers and photographers.

“I come here every year... this place is so great for us photography fans,” said one visitor, capturing the excitement shared by many.

Local wetland parks have made thorough preparations, ensuring the migratory guests find plentiful food such as reeds, cattails, and lotus roots. New acoustic sensors have also been installed to monitor bird populations and activity, providing stronger scientific protection.

Stretching over 100 kilometres, a dedicated swan-watching belt now runs along the Yellow River, offering visitors breathtaking views. The peak migration period is expected in mid-to-late December, when more than 10,000 swans are anticipated to gather.
