The coastal city of Qingdao in east China’s Shandong Province is experiencing a tourism boom, fuelled by its cinematic appeal and stunning seaside scenery. Blending historic European-style architecture with natural beauty, Qingdao has long served as a favourite backdrop for filmmakers – and now, fans are flocking to see those scenes come to life.
“We came here after watching A Little Red Flower (2021). The gorgeous sunset is the perfect backdrop for couples like us,” said a visitor at the Taiping Mountain cableway.
At the China Movie Metropolis, China’s first large-scale industrial film base, tourists can step into famous movie scenes or even taste dishes featured in popular dramas such as As Beautiful As You (2024). Fans of submarine blockbuster Operation Leviathan (2025) can explore the real-life set and board the “Dragon Whale” submarine.
During the National Day holiday, Qingdao’s tourism surged 18 percent year on year; proof that its silver-screen magic continues to captivate.
