Medog, once one of Xizang’s most isolated counties, is fast emerging as a sought-after tourist destination, propelled by the transformative highway linking it to the outside world. For local resident Kunsang Norbu, the change is personal. After university, he returned home to become Medog’s first tour guide, blending hometown pride with a passion for storytelling. “Medog had no roads when I was young… I’ve long wished to introduce my hometown to people from across the country,” he said.
Carved deep into the Himalayas, the Bome–Medog highway ended decades of isolation and set off sweeping development. Today, Medog’s highlights draw nationwide attention, from Lotus Park, once an impassable swamp, to the Guoguotang scenic area with its dramatic 180-degree bend of the Yarlung Zangbo River.
“Guoguotang has now become a sensation,” Kunsang noted, as visitors flock to the county to experience its untold landscapes and culture.
