[China Travelogue] Hainan Tourism Heats Up as New Policies Take Effect

Tourism in south China’s Hainan Province is gaining strong momentum following the launch of island-wide special customs operations, with travel demand picking up well ahead of the Spring Festival holiday.

Since the new measures took effect in December, visitor numbers have risen steadily. Domestic flight bookings for the Spring Festival period have already surpassed 110,000 tickets, with several popular routes close to selling out. Accommodation demand is also climbing, as homestay bookings in Sanya recorded a 45 percent year-on-year increase.

Travel agents have observed a clear rise in visitor flows. “The number of tourists from Shanghai to Hainan has shown a continuous upward trend,” one industry representative said, noting that destinations such as Wuzhizhou Island and Sanya Atlantis remain among the most popular attractions.

The upcoming Spring Festival is expected to mark the first major holiday travel rush since the new arrangements were introduced, supported by expanded duty-free policies and visa-free entry for travellers from 86 countries.
