A vast sea of clouds has blanketed the Wanfeng Mountain Nature Reserve in Luoping County, southwest China’s Yunnan Province, creating a striking winter landscape and marking the prime season for viewing this natural spectacle.
Formed by sharp contrasts between daytime and night-time temperatures and enriched by abundant moisture, the clouds gradually unfold at dawn. As the sun rises, their colours shift from deep grey to soft white, before turning a warm golden hue. Sunlight then breaks through, setting the clouds in motion as they surge and roll across the mountain peaks.
From higher vantage points, the mountains appear to float beneath an endless cloud ocean, merging sky and land into a scene of remarkable depth and tranquillity. This seasonal phenomenon is shaped by nearby Wanfeng Lake, where the meeting of warm and cold air currents with the surrounding terrain creates a misty veil, gently concealing the villages nestled among the hills.
