[Cultural China] Kazakh Throat Singing Finds New Voice in Xinjiang
: :

In the vast grasslands of Xinjiang, the beautiful art of Khoomei, or throat singing, is finding new life through the dedication of Kazakh cultural inheritors. This ancient vocal tradition, rooted in nomadic life, allows singers to produce multiple pitches at once, often echoing the sounds of wind, water, and animals – bringing listeners closer to nature itself.

For Kazakhs, Khoomei is more than music. It embodies reverence for the natural world and a spiritual harmony with the environment. Leading this revival is Duman Beybithan, who, along with his band, has reimagined age-old lyrics while blending traditional instruments with the mesmerising resonance of Khoomei.

“Throat singing expresses our love and respect for nature”, Duman shared with a Chinese news outlet. Since forming his group in 2006, he has been committed to refining the art and passing it forward. His dream is to establish a Kazakh Throat Singing Art Association, inspiring young people to preserve this extraordinary heritage and share its magic with the world.
