[Cultural China] Traditional Rituals Kick Off as Dragon Boat Season Draws Near
: :

As the Dragon Boat Festival approaches, communities across China hold age-old ceremonies to retrieve dragon boats, a custom believed to awaken these vessels after lying dormant underwater for months.

At around 8 a.m., the sound of loud drumbeats echoed across Shipai Village in Guangzhou, where hundreds of villagers gathered. Eight dragon boats resurfaced after resting underwater for an entire year. Villagers waded into the water to clear away mud before washing and polishing every part of the boats. Built from premium timber, the vessels will later be sent to workshops for inspection and fine-tuning following the ritual, ensuring they are fully prepared for the upcoming races.

Dragon boat traditions have connected three generations in the village. A decade ago, young Mingxuan first picked up an oar to pose for photos alongside his grandfather and father. Today, he is learning to play the dragon boat drums from his grandfather, mastering how to begin each rhythm and maintain a steady beat.

This retrieval ceremony is only the beginning. The village will host a full lineup of dragon boat activities throughout the festival season. Villagers will also make rice dumplings, distribute traditional pastries, and enjoy communal feasts, carrying forward time-honored local customs.
