[Cultural China] Tanka Nuptials: A Waterborne Affair in Nansha
: :

A bridal procession on flower-decked boats, a wedding ceremony steeped in intangible cultural heritage — this vibrant traditional group wedding in a waterside community drew crowds of residents and visitors to Dongyong Town in Guangzhou's Nansha District.

Grooms arrived on festively adorned boats at the pier in the morning, completed time-honored bridal greeting rituals, and embarked on a scenic water procession. After that, the couples ascended the main stage, performed a series of traditional rites including stepping over a burning pan to ward off evil spirits and executing the ceremonial three bows.

Mr. Guo, Newlywed:

"The most captivating part was experiencing my grandparents' wedding traditions firsthand. We'd only heard stories about these customs — actually living them was incredibly moving."

The ten newlyweds described the experience as both novel and unforgettable, with the authentic Tanka wedding traditions adding unique cultural depth to their special day. Event organizers hope that Nansha will evolve into a living showcase of waterside traditions, serving as both a symbol and custodian of this distinctive aquatic culture.
