Shaoxing in eastern China has a new reason to linger after sundown. The city’s first Huangjiu art district has opened, turning the town’s famous yellow wine culture into a lively, hands-on playground where heritage meets the hip.
At the launch, visitors sipped and savoured huangjiu tastings, watched traditional huadiao demonstrations, and tried stove-side brewing, then popped into magic shows, art parades, and creative craft stalls. The mix feels equal parts museum and street festival, with something to charm curious locals and weekend explorers alike.
The project is a joint effort by government, businesses, and citizens to weave Shaoxing’s intangible heritage into contemporary art and trendy consumption. Shaoxing huangjiu is a local specialty brewed from premium polished glutinous rice using high-quality yellow-skinned wheat as the fermentation starter, and now the city’s oldest flavours are getting a boldly modern stage.
