China’s tourism scene is thriving as visitors seek increasingly immersive cultural experiences. From domestic travellers exploring vibrant local traditions to international tourists drawn to authentic heritage, there is a growing appetite for “hands-on” participation.

In east China’s Anhui’s ancient Zhanqi Village, night-time parades featuring centuries-old fish-shaped lanterns light up narrow streets. Tourists join in by holding lanterns, playing drums, and even making the lanterns themselves. One visitor described the experience as “really fun and I felt really excited and happy to be involved.” The festive atmosphere has sparked a surge in local craft production and rentals, creating a lively cultural economy.

Meanwhile, in east China’s Jingdezhen City, the “ceramics capital”, artisans showcase handmade porcelain at a bustling weekend market in a revamped factory space, attracting both domestic and international art lovers. Visitors can also step back in time with traditional clothing and photography experiences in Beijing, immersing themselves fully in China’s rich cultural heritage.
