Beijing is welcoming the Spring Festival with a vibrant mix of tradition and modern celebration, as the Chinese New Year approaches on February 17, ushering in the Year of the Horse.
Across the city, New Year markets and seasonal activities highlight the cultural depth of the festival. At the National Agricultural Exhibition Centre, the 30th Old Beijing Spring Festival Shopping Festival is drawing large crowds. Visitors browse traditional delicacies, festive decorations and handicrafts linked to China’s intangible cultural heritage, with vendors from across the country and abroad showcasing regional flavours and time-honoured brands.
In Shichahai, a historic area known for its lakes, a newly opened ice rink has become a popular gathering point. Skating activities sit alongside a Spring Festival market offering food, cultural and creative products.
“I can really feel the strong New Year atmosphere here… I also feel the cultural charm of old Beijing,” said visitor Liu Haotian.
