Recently, the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou hosted a youth lion dance tournament, where 20 qualified teams competed for top honors.
The competition featured two categories. The traditional single-lion event got underway first. Teenage competitors aged 12 to 24 leaped and maneuvered skillfully atop stilt platforms, showcasing the authentic charm of lion dance through strong fundamental techniques. Each team in the group-lion category performed with three to six lion costumes.
Young students from primary and middle schools executed well-coordinated and seamless formation changes. Several performers incorporated modern dance elements into traditional lion dance routines, creating performances that were both lively and majestic.
This year, organizers allowed contestants to combine traditional drumbeats with ethnic musical instruments or contemporary pop music, while also encouraging greater creativity in routine design.
A nationally recognized intangible cultural heritage rooted in Guangzhou, Guangdong lion dance boasts a long history and rich cultural significance. United by their passion for the art form, participating teams exchanged skills and experiences throughout the event.
