Traditional Cantonese wedding customs recently came to life in Shawan Ancient Town in Panyu District, Guangzhou. Visitors were able to experience a time-honored wedding ceremony set against the backdrop of traditional Cantonese architecture and historic streets, as if stepping back in time.
A grand bridal procession made its way through the ancient streets. Leading the way was the “Dajin Jie” (a traditional Cantonese wedding matron), carrying a golden rooster, longan, and lotus seeds—each symbolizing blessings: the rooster for good news, longan for love and unity, lotus root for a harmonious match, and lotus seeds for fertility.
The bride, portrayed by an actress, appeared in traditional attire and performed rituals such as tossing an embroidered ball and bowing before the altar. Many onlookers eagerly tried to catch the ball, creating a lively and cheerful atmosphere. Elders familiar with the customs also joined in to demonstrate the rituals and explain their meanings to younger generations, passing down folk traditions in a joyful setting.
