George Ng / Hong Kong Director, Producer:
Starting a business isn’t about age – it’s about timing. You do it when the timing is right. But I was a bit lost when I started my second career. Starting a business is actually a lonely journey.
Okay, ready – action.
My name is George and I’ve lived in Mainland China for many years. I went to Canada at the age of thirteen and lived there for around sixteen years. I realised that the place wasn’t really for me.
I felt that as Chinese people, we should be somewhere that feels like home to us. So I decided to return to Hong Kong. I actually went to Shanghai 23 years ago, because I had an opportunity. I am considered one of the first Hong Kong directors to shoot reality shows.
But if I truly wanted to reconnect with my roots, I should return to the mainland, because I was born in Guangzhou. I first came to Nansha in 2023. I saw how beautiful the scenery was here. The 20-nautical-mile coastline, the yacht club and Shiao Street – it almost felt like we were in Europe. It has both the old and the new.
For example, historically, there was the Tin Hau Temple. In 2023 I set up a company here. A friend introduced the place to me, saying: “Director, this is a great place. Besides the beautiful scenery, there are many supportive policies, and the government’s assistance is something that can really help.”
I feel that here, I can find my own space – a new world. In the first two years of the company, because I was trying new things, new places, new people, I was quite confused at times. I had a lot of ideas – but not everyone necessarily agreed with them. The first thing I needed to do was to get to know more people.
Li Nanyan / Project Director, Startup Incubation Base:
He never tries to rush results. He insists on coming back to Nansha every month to review his work and look for resources here, including exchanges with the team at the base here. The collision and integration of the two cultures also has a positive effect.
George Ng:
As with all things in life, you need to try. If you miss the opportunity, there’s a chance you won’t get it again. So I decided that this year, I would try filming my first micro drama here.
Chan Yeung-ching / Hong Kong Entrepreneur, Micro Drama Guest Actor:
I play the bodyguard of the male lead. Through my conversations with George, he gave me a lot of advice, including how my product should be filmed. So by following his direction, there may be new opportunities to try new things.
George Ng:
Right now, Hong Kong’s film and television industry is facing an economic downturn. Whether it’s fostering synergy or creating more opportunities for Hong Kong film-and-TV talent – both in front of and behind the camera – to come to the Greater Bay Area, I hope more possibilities can emerge. I feel that in Nansha, you truly have the right timing, location, and people.
The subdistrict office was incredibly helpful – they drove us every day to scout locations. They hope to help Nansha’s cultural tourism sector and bring its cultural offerings overseas.
Using Nansha as a base location, you can produce in the Greater Bay Area, and then, just like we are doing now, push into new markets – passing through Hong Kong, working with Hong Kong actors, and from Hong Kong, reaching the international stage.
