[GBA Thrills] Shenzhen’s 24-Hour Food Banks Redefine Tech-Driven Social Care

Shenzhen’s 24-hour food banks are drawing widespread attention for combining compassion with smart technology, offering a modern approach to community support. Built as refrigerated, app-connected vending machines, they store surplus or near-expiry fresh food donated by supermarkets, hotels and other local businesses.

Launched in 2022, the programme has already distributed around 500,000 meals, preventing an estimated 195 tonnes of food waste and cutting carbon emissions by roughly 390 tonnes. Its system is designed to prioritise those most in need, including low-income families, elderly residents living alone, sanitation workers and people with disabilities.

Through the “iShenzhen” app, registered users can reserve food before 8pm each day, while any remaining items are released to the public afterwards to ensure nothing goes to waste. Strict safety checks, temperature-controlled storage and full traceability safeguard quality, while a discreet, no-contact process helps preserve dignity and reduce stigma.
