Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Beijing on Tuesday for a two-day state visit aimed at deepening ties with Xi Jinping and reinforcing the countries’ long-standing comprehensive strategic partnership.

The visit, held at Xi’s invitation from 19 to 20 May, coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Sino-Russian Friendship Treaty, which both sides describe as the foundation of bilateral relations. Xi and Putin are expected to hold talks covering politics, security, energy, trade and regional affairs before joining senior officials for expanded discussions.

Energy cooperation is set to feature prominently, including progress on the proposed Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline, long-term oil agreements and wider use of the yuan and ruble in trade settlements. The leaders will also attend the launch of the Russia-China Years of Education 2026–27 programme, highlighting growing cultural and educational exchanges between the two nations.
