Guangning County in southern China is renowned as the country’s “hometown of bamboo.” Local artisans transform ordinary green bamboo into stunning artworks known as bamboo thread paintings through elaborate craftsmanship.
Green bamboo features long fibers and exceptional toughness, making it ideal for creating such artworks. The production process involves a series of meticulous steps. Craftsmen first select premium green bamboo, remove unwanted parts, and split the bamboo into strips before refining them into slender 5-millimeter bamboo threads. These fine threads are then handwoven and firmly pressed to form a smooth, flat base. Landscape, floral, bird, and other delicate patterns are later applied to the surface using eco-friendly color-printing technology, creating vivid and layered visual effects.
A wide range of derivative products has also been developed, including decorative table ornaments and vanity mirrors featuring bamboo thread paintings. These traditional bamboo artworks attracted strong interest from overseas buyers at the 139th Canton Fair, with many potential orders currently under negotiation. The time-honored local bamboo craft is steadily gaining broader recognition in international markets.
