Youth exchanges are creating new avenues for China-U.S. understanding, with a recent marine science programme offering a glimpse of how shared interests can bring young people from both countries closer.

In late March, 20 Chinese and U.S. doctoral students spent 12 days travelling from Hong Kong via Ningbo to Shanghai, combining marine research with cultural exchanges. They worked together on underwater robotics and water quality monitoring, visited research facilities and exchanged views on ocean science and aquaculture.

The voyage was part of the “50,000 in Five Years” youth exchange initiative, launched in November 2023. More than 50,000 young Americans have since visited China, reaching the five-year target two-and-a-half years ahead of schedule.

The participants later wrote to Chinese President Xi Jinping, who replied encouraging young people from both countries to deepen mutual understanding, strengthen friendship and contribute to the sustainable development of China-U.S. relations.

The programme highlighted the potential for these connections to develop into longer-term cooperation in science, climate change and ocean exploration.
