[Global Connect] CPEC Hydropower Project Strengthens China-Pakistan Energy Cooperation

The Suki Kinari Hydropower Project, a flagship green energy initiative under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), is strengthening China-Pakistan energy cooperation while supporting Pakistan’s transition towards cleaner power.

Located in Mansehra district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, the 884-megawatt project began construction in January 2017 and entered operation in September 2024. It has since generated more than 2.8 billion kWh of clean electricity for Pakistan’s national grid, while helping save nearly 1.3 million tonnes of standard coal annually.

The project is also fostering technical cooperation and skills development, with Chinese and Pakistani engineers working together across design, construction and operations.

Launched in 2013, CPEC has steadily expanded from plans into major energy and infrastructure projects, further deepening bilateral cooperation.
