Azerbaijan’s national space agency Azercosmos is looking to deepen cooperation with China in areas including commercial satellites and deep-space research, as the two countries expand their space partnership.
Azerbaijan joined China’s International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) programme in October 2023, when the two countries signed a joint statement on cooperation during the 74th International Astronautical Congress in Baku. The partnership covers areas including scientific experiments, personnel training and the installation of scientific instruments.
Azercosmos is closely following preparations for the lunar research programme and participating in related workshops and seminars.
Dunay Badirkhanov, acting chair of the agency’s board, said the high costs of space and digital exploration make international cooperation increasingly important, particularly for emerging space nations.
Speaking on the sidelines of the 77th International Astronautical Congress in Antalya, Türkiye, Badirkhanov said Azerbaijan and China already have strong ties in space research, with further opportunities expected to emerge as the sector develops.
