China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment has released new underwater footage of Scarborough Shoal, or Huangyan Dao, revealing vibrant coral reefs and thriving marine life. Described as a “blue sea jewel”, the shoal remains a vital sanctuary in the South China Sea.
Alongside the footage, the ministry published its 2025 investigation and assessment report, confirming that the area continues to maintain excellent marine environmental quality. Compiled by eight research institutions, the report draws on extensive field surveys from 2024 and 2025, satellite remote-sensing data and historical studies to present a comprehensive picture of the region’s ecological health, including coral reef systems and seagrass beds.
According to the findings, Scarborough Shoal’s ecosystems show strong diversity, stability and resilience, offering both a crucial habitat for marine species and valuable data for understanding global climate trends.
