China is stepping up efforts to restore damaged ecosystems, with a new round of landscape conservation projects set to begin later this year across key ecological regions.

The projects will cover areas including the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau and the Yellow and Yangtze river basins, with greater emphasis on technology and cross-regional coordination.

In Zhangjiakou, north China’s Hebei Province, researchers are using root-guiding tubes to help tree seedlings develop deeper root systems and access groundwater, reducing reliance on flood irrigation. The technique has lifted the three-year survival rate of trees across nearly 667 hectares of sandy land from about 35 percent to 92 percent.

Meanwhile, Hainan is restoring fragmented tropical rainforest habitats by creating ecological corridors and planting 13 native tree species, including agarwood and Chinese plum trees. The project, using six tailored restoration approaches, is expected to be completed by the end of September.

The central government will also refine financial incentives and allow provinces to jointly apply for funding, supporting coordinated restoration across administrative boundaries.
