[HK Thrills] Hong Kong Records Strongest Quarterly Growth Since 2021

Hong Kong’s economy accelerated sharply at the start of 2026, recording its strongest growth in nearly five years as exports, tourism and domestic spending all gained momentum. Advance estimates released by the Census and Statistics Department showed real GDP expanding 5.9 percent year-on-year in the first quarter, up from 4 percent in the previous quarter.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, the economy grew 2.9 percent quarter-on-quarter, marking the city’s strongest three-month performance since 2021. Officials described the outlook as robust, pointing to strong external trade, resilient local demand and rising visitor arrivals.

Exports led the expansion, driven by surging demand for AI-related electronics and stronger regional supply chain activity. Private consumption also improved, supported by major events, concerts and conferences across the city. Visitor arrivals topped 14.3 million in the first quarter, boosting spending in retail, hospitality and transport sectors as Hong Kong’s recovery continues to broaden.
