Hong Kong hosted the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union Robot Contest 2026 (ABU Robocon) on August 23, bringing together 16 university teams from 15 countries and regions for a showcase of robotics, creativity and teamwork.
Co-organised by Radio Television Hong Kong and Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, the competition featured the theme “Kung Fu Quest”, drawing inspiration from Chinese martial arts. Teams used two robots to forge traditional weapons, collect martial arts manuals and compete in strategic duels, putting their technical skills and coordination to the test.
The event attracted about 2,000 spectators. It also featured a human-robot performance involving martial artist Samuel Hui, a children’s martial arts troupe and Chinese percussionists.
The contest also offered participants opportunities to experience Hong Kong beyond the competition, with teams visiting local attractions such as the Hong Kong Science Park. Nearly 100 young participants will also travel to Qianhai in Shenzhen to explore the region’s innovation and technology development, broadening their understanding of opportunities across the Greater Bay Area.
