Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping China's gaming industry, making game development faster, more accessible and increasingly creative while enhancing the player experience.
Showcased at this year's ChinaJoy gaming expo, AI-powered tools are helping developers generate code from simple text prompts, streamline production and reduce the cost of testing new ideas. Rather than replacing creativity, the technology allows developers to focus more on refining concepts and gameplay.
AI is also transforming games themselves. Advanced AI agents trained on extensive datasets are enabling more natural conversations with in-game characters, creating richer and more immersive role-playing experiences.
The technology is lowering barriers for aspiring creators, with students from disciplines beyond computer science and art now developing games using AI platforms. As developers continue adopting these tools, the gaming sector is also becoming a valuable testing ground for broader AI applications. Meanwhile, Chinese self-developed games generated more than US$12 billion overseas in the first half of the year, reflecting the industry's growing global reach.
