An AI-powered paediatric assistant developed by Beijing Children's Hospital is helping bring specialist expertise to grassroots clinics across China, improving access to quality healthcare for families in rural communities.
Already deployed across 12 provinces and regions, the system supports doctors by transcribing consultations, analysing symptoms in real time, generating case summaries, and providing diagnostic and treatment recommendations alongside the clinician's own assessment. Trained on nearly a decade of specialist knowledge, 30 million high-quality medical records, and the latest clinical guidelines, the AI is designed to enhance rather than replace doctors, including in complex neurological cases.
The initiative aims to reduce the need for families to travel to major cities for specialist care by equipping county, township, and village clinics with advanced clinical decision support. By extending leading paediatric expertise beyond urban hospitals, the technology is helping narrow China's urban-rural healthcare gap and bring high-quality medical services closer to home.
