[Tech Trends] Smart Agricultural Technologies Reshape Farming Production in Nanjing
: :

It is now the critical period for fall grain field management in China. Across a rice paddy of roughly 267 hectares in Nanjing, east China’s Jiangsu Province, there are no crowds of farmers tending the fields. Instead, a multispectral drone takes off automatically from its smart docking station and patrols the entire area along a pre-set route. Data including crop growth status, soil nutrient levels and potential pest and disease risks are transmitted in real time via the drone to a digital service platform. After intelligent analysis, the system quickly generates targeted management instructions to guide farmers to manage water, fertilizer and pests with precision.

Chen Xiaojian / Director of Agricultural Cooperative:

"We used to farm mainly based on experience. Problems like pests and diseases were often detected late and addressed slowly. Now with drone field inspections and intelligent analysis, we catch issues early and take much more targeted measures."

Aquaculture has also been equipped with a "smart brain" system. In an indoor aquaculture facility, 16 large breeding tanks are arranged in neat rows. An intelligent management and control platform runs around the clock, delivering end-to-end smart control of water quality monitoring, equipment control and automatic feeding.

Qiu Cheng / Manager of Agricultural Company:

"Before we adopted this system, each tank produced around 4,000 kilograms of fish. Now with the system in place, each tank yields just over 5,000 kilograms."

From field crop farming to aquaculture, various smart management platforms and intelligent equipment systems are being rapidly rolled out across Nanjing’s agricultural production sites. AI technologies such as agriculture-focused domain-specific large models and AI agents are also expanding into the entire value chain covering breeding, cultivation and supervision. Practices such as one person managing roughly 30 hectares of greenhouses, autonomous drone patrols and cost-saving smart aquaculture are becoming increasingly widespread.
