China has reached a new milestone in green technology with the successful installation of the world’s first 20-megawatt offshore wind turbine in east China’s Fujian Province. Developed by China Three Gorges Corporation, the turbine is expected to generate over 80 million kWh of electricity each year, enough to power about 44,000 homes, while reducing carbon emissions by around 64,000 tons and saving 24,000 tons of coal.
Located more than 30 kilometres offshore in deep waters, the project faced rough seas and a short construction window during the monsoon season. Using an advanced installation vessel, the team carefully lifted three 147-metre-long blades to a hub 174 metres above sea level, creating a rotor 300 metres wide – almost the size of ten football fields.
This milestone highlights a major advancement in offshore wind technology and the global transition to sustainable energy.
